Tool 4: Phonics and Spelling Sampling
Each of the course’s tools include five segments that support educator knowledge and practice. Sample effective decoding and encoding instruction content from Tool 4: Phonics and Spelling.
Part 1: What?
Educators begin with the fundamentals of reading, laying the groundwork for a solid understanding of phonics concepts. An Anticipation Guide is provided to help educators focus on prior knowledge before the lesson begins. This guide is revisited later in the course to highlight what they have learned. Within the lesson, a video introduces the topic.
Part 2: Why?
In the second part of the lesson an overview of the most up-to-date research on literacy instruction is discussed. After, educators take a quiz that requires a grade of 80% or higher to move onto the next portion of the course. In the lesson, a video explores findings on how the brain learns to read.
Part 3: How?
After successfully completing the quiz in part 2, educators will have the opportunity to observe a classroom in action. A comprehensive phonics lesson will be shared, showcasing effective teaching methods. Additionally, a downloadable companion guide will be provided, highlighting key areas for reflection and note-taking while watching the classroom videos.
Part 4: Activity/Do
In Part 4, educators dive into applying their knowledge through hands-on classroom practice, transforming student engagement. The “Time to Plan” section spotlights the essential components of a stellar phonics program. The highlighted lesson snippet showcases must-have criteria. A downloadable guide is offered that reinforces the steps for effective instruction.
Part 5: Reflection
