Alphabetic Principle Sessions

Diagnosing and Providing Interventions for Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) Needs

Audience: Reading Coaches, Grade PreK–2 Teachers, Interventionists, Reading Specialists, Special Education Teachers, ELL Teachers

Overview: Educators will identify all of the skills a student has mastered if a student is able to read a pseudo CVC word. Then they will learn how to diagnose skill deficits using Nonsense Word Fluency and learn active engagement strategies to use for each of the skill needs.

Participants will:

• Learn how the measure for Nonsense Word Fluency is critical for reading success

• Diagnose skill deficits and analyze their impact on instructional practices

• Learn to design instruction to positively impact student success

Teaching Blending to Non-Blenders

Audience: Reading Coaches, Grade K–1 Teachers, Interventionists, Special Education Teachers, ELL Teachers

Overview: Do you have students who are having difficulty blending? Or students who can’t get past sounding out every letter of a word? Learn strategies to teach the concept of blending and to move students to whole-word reading without subvocalizing and to help them increase accuracy and fluency.

Participants will:

• Discuss how the 95 Percent Group’s Blending Continuum provides a systematic approach to the blending process

• Learn strategies to teach students to blend accurately and fluently

• Practice how to move students from sound by sound blending to whole-word reading
