95 Percent Group Unveils 95 Phonics Core Program® Word Study, Grades 4 and 5

Developed in response to customer demand, evidence-based phonics program initially designed for K-3 is now available for grades 4 and 5

Lincolnshire, Ill. – February 1, 2023 – Today 95 Percent Group LLC, the trusted source for comprehensive, proven literacy solutions, launched 95 Phonics Core Program® Word Study, Grades 4 and 5. The new program extends the evidence-based classroom success of 95 Percent Group’s K-3 program, a Tier 1 solution for whole class and small group instruction, supporting explicit, structured literacy instruction. It engages students with informational text and literary passages to help them develop fast and meaningful word recognition and build fluency, comprehension, and confidence. It also includes professional learning and ongoing coaching at the district and building level to support teachers in mastering phonics-based instruction.

Chief Academic Officer for 95 Percent Group Laura Stewart noted that 95 Phonics Core Program Word Study, Grades 4 and 5 is a natural evolution for the company’s phonics ecosystem, a cohesive suite of products and professional learning services aligned with the Science of Reading.

“Expanding our phonics ecosystem to support fourth and fifth grade is the direct result of educators asking us for a solution to fill the continued, growing need for explicit Tier 1 phonics and word study skill development beyond the third grade,” said Stewart. “This is a unique offering for schools and it is exciting to be able to bring this resource to the classroom to help both struggling and on grade-level students improve their reading and spelling abilities.”

As teachers around the country continue to grapple with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on learning, recent research underscores the importance of reaching struggling readers beyond third grade. The 2022 National Assessment of Education Progress – the Nation’s Report Card – revealed the average fourth-grade reading score was lower than all previous assessment years going back to 2005, dropping back to 1992 levels.

“Research on reading instruction has been very clear for more than 20 years. The 95 Phonics Core Program that 95 Percent Group offers for grades K to 5 is the answer to general education, Tier 1, evidence-based systematic and direct literacy instruction that aligns with research. Our students have made substantial progress using the program,” said Lisa Vitale Stanzione, supervisor of K to 5 Special Education and General Education Intervention, Bernards Township School District in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

Grounded in the Science of Reading, 95 Phonics Core Program Word Study, Grades 4 and 5 is a 30-week curriculum designed for daily 30-minute instruction. It contains easy-to-follow instructional dialogue to support teacher-directed phonics instruction. Through the use of authentic text based on science, social studies and current events, the program focuses on reviewing previously taught skills through word play, which enables students to read multisyllable words in order to meet grade-level expectations. The program’s instructional routines include guiding students toward applying word attack strategies such as identifying the 6 Syllable Types and recognizing the morphological structure of words with the express goal of developing reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and confidence.

With the original 95 Phonics Core Program for Grades K-3, students practice reading with decodable text that encompasses recently learned phonics skills. Multiple independently conducted research studies have demonstrated that the efficacy of the program meets the criteria for ESSA Level 1 evidence, with students making accelerated literacy progress above and beyond the comparison groups. With the new program for Grades 4 and 5, older students will now be able to continue building their skills with instruction and resources specifically designed to meet their needs. Grades 4 and 5 resources feature print and physical components, including a Teachers’ Edition as well as a student workbook with perforated pages. The package also contains a Student Manipulatives Kit for between five and 20 students, which contains a double-sided Morphology Mat, a Morpheme Cards sheet and dry-erase markers for students. There is an option for Early Adopters to access a slate of digital materials including presentation files for each lesson, family support letters in both English and Spanish, spelling lists, and end of unit assessments. In addition, literary passages that are in the student workbooks are also available for download.

Utah State Board of Education Approves 95 Percent Group Resources as Evidence-Informed, Recommended Supplemental Programs for Grades K-5

Adoption highlights programs’ alignment to the Science of Reading

Lincolnshire, Ill. – January 30, 2023 – 95 Percent Group LLC, the trusted source for comprehensive, proven literacy solutions, announced today the Utah State Board of Education approved its flagship 95 Phonics Core Program® and 95 Phonics Intervention and 95 Phonological Awareness Intervention as Recommended Supplemental Literacy Curriculum Resources.

In 2022, Utah joined a growing number of states to realign reading instruction to structured literacy, grounded in the Science of Reading. The Utah State Board of Education convened a panel of experts to oversee the process of implementing a requirement that districts use materials backed by the Science of Reading. Its goal is to get 70 percent of Utah third graders reading at grade level by 2027.

The selection of 95 Percent Group’s programs for state schools is based on rigorous review by Utah’s professional educators.

“At 95 Percent Group, we are committed to developing programs that align to the Science of Reading, and our research demonstrates their efficacy,” said Brad Lindaas, CEO of 95 Percent Group. “We’re excited to equip more Utah educators with evidence-based reading solutions they can trust, and to empower them in accelerating student reading improvement.”

Even before the disruption of the pandemic, only 35 percent of fourth graders met the standards for reading proficiency set by the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Students who are not proficient by the end of third grade are less likely to thrive in school and graduate high school.

95 Percent Group’s Science of Reading ecosystem is designed to help teachers use structured literacy to close the reading skills gap with a rich portfolio of tools for Tier 1 and 2 reading instruction. Each product connects to every other product, allowing educators to add elements to their curriculum to meet the needs of all students, regardless of where they are in building their foundational reading skills.

The programs adopted by the Utah State Board of Education are:

  • 95 Phonics Core Program®, a whole-class phonics curriculum, helps to address and prevent reading gaps for all students. 95 Phonics Core adds an explicit phonics strand to the daily reading block to ensure that all K-3 students receive consistent evidence-based and research-aligned phonics instruction to improve outcomes. There are multiple studies that demonstrate its effectiveness.
  • 95 Phonics Intervention: The 95 Percent Group Intervention Phonics Package provides teachers with a diagnostic screener to pinpoint a struggling student's precise deficits and effectively implement targeted intervention lessons to address and close specific skill gaps to mastery. This approach is proven to be as effective at teaching children to read as the explicit instruction delivered by the teacher. The package includes:
    • Phonics Lesson Library™ (Basic, Advanced, & Multisyllable Levels)
    • Phonics Chip Kit™ (Basic, Advanced & Multisyllable Levels)
    • Phonics Screener for Intervention (1 Schoolwide License)
  • 95 Phonological Awareness (PA) Intervention products are designed primarily for pre-K through grade 1 and are sequenced from the simplest syllable skills with compound words to the most complex phoneme substitution tasks. Abstract syllables, rimes, and phonemes become concrete using manipulatives to enhance awareness and manipulation of sounds that are included in the Phonological Awareness Lessons Deluxe Package.

The Utah State Department of Education’s expert panel reviewed and accepted the independently conducted study by Learning Experience Design Research that demonstrated the effectiveness of using 95 Phonics Core Program with either the 95 Phonological Awareness Intervention or the 95 Phonics Intervention. In the study design, the 95 Percent Group pilot school was matched with a randomly selected comparison group that engaged in “business as usual” literacy instruction and intervention for that district. The pilot school’s students showed advanced growth on the i-Ready® diagnostic reading assessment. 95 Percent Group’s program effect size was doubled when it was used over two years (0.64 for the pilot school vs. 0.31 for the comparison school).

95 Percent Group LLC Acquires Hill Reading Achievement Program (HillRAP) From Hill Learning Center

Acquisition adds new digital solution to the company’s phonics ecosystem and expands its offerings to support Tier 3 intervention

Lincolnshire, IL & Durham, NCJanuary 18, 202395 Percent Group LLC, the trusted source for comprehensive, proven literacy solutions, today announced the acquisition of the Hill Reading Achievement Program (HillRAP) from Hill Learning Center, an education nonprofit in Durham, North Carolina, that has served students with learning and attention challenges for 45 years. HillRAP is a technology-based, structured literacy intervention solution for students who are persistently struggling to learn to read, including those with dyslexia. It will be supported by 95 Percent Group’s trusted professional learning resources. HillRAP represents the first acquisition for 95 Percent Group, a portfolio company of Leeds Equity Partners.

“This begins an exciting chapter for 95 Percent Group: we are entering a new market and opening up greater opportunities to serve more schools and students who need us,” said Brad Lindaas, CEO. “HillRAP not only provides us with a mission-aligned product that supports our overall vision for offering schools a comprehensive phonics ecosystem, but it also gives us a proven digital solution. 95 Percent Group will invest in the ongoing development and innovation of HillRAP, expanding its capabilities to improve the literacy skills and lives of more students.”

Hill Learning Center was the first school in North Carolina dedicated to supporting students with learning and attention challenges. It developed the distinctive methodology that underpins HillRAP to serve students in its innovative school and began training teachers in other settings in 2001 with input from public school teachers and administrators. Today more than 1,000 teachers across 11 states use HillRAP to help students improve their reading skills.

"We are proud of the work that we have done to advance literacy for students with persistent reading difficulties, and HillRAP has been an important part of that. Our vision has always been to reach as many students with learning and attention challenges as possible. We are grateful to have the opportunity to expand HillRAP’s reach and potential through its acquisition by 95 Percent Group while also doubling down on our mission and impact locally," said Beth Anderson, Executive Director of Hill Learning Center.

Schools and districts have long relied upon 95 Percent Group’s teacher-centric resources and robust professional learning to support Tiers 1 and 2 literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading. As a Tier 3 intervention program, HillRAP provides direct, explicit, mastery-based instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

As a digital solution, it supports teachers delivering individualized instruction in-person or remotely, while equipping teachers with data-driven insights into student learning and progress. Teachers deploy HillRAP in 45-minute blocks, four to five days per week, using a 4:1 student to teacher ratio. In line with product offerings in the 95 Percent Group product ecosystem, HillRAP has a strong basis in evidence. Third-party evaluations of HillRAP in public schools have demonstrated positive impacts on students’ reading skills and show that students working with HillRAP improve at faster rates than students not using the program.

“We are excited about this acquisition of HillRAP, given its track record of increasing student literacy levels. HillRAP’s Tier 3 intervention instruction, with evidence-based methodologies and digital innovation, supports learners with the greatest needs. This is particularly important as reading is necessary for students to succeed in all school subjects and is critical for success later in life,” said Scott VanHoy, Partner of Leeds Equity Partners.

95 Percent Group’s acquisition of HillRAP from Hill Learning Center officially closed in December 2022. Five members of the Hill Learning Center team, who support HillRAP, joined 95 Percent Group in January 2023. Hill Learning Center will remain an independent nonprofit and continue its core mission of delivering research-based programs and instruction for students and educators. Hill will hold a perpetual license with 95 Percent Group to continue using HillRAP with its own students as well as with select schools and districts, primarily in North Carolina.
