Phonics is perhaps the misunderstood stepsister of the literacy components. It seems to be a lightning rod for controversy and is either loved or hated. In short, phonics is a system for mapping between spoken words and the written letters that spell the word. The term phonics
is often used to refer to an explicit approach to teaching reading that is in contrast to a meaning-based or whole language approach. It’s really a lot more basic than that; phonics is simply showing how letters spell spoken sounds heard in words.
